The paintings of Renaissance painter are brought to life in this videoed performance of tableaux vivants: acting, sculpture and painting together.
For me, this is a giant confirmation of Andrew Graham-Dixon’s comments in his lecture (in Edinburgh 2018) that Caravaggio was so immersed in sculpture, that he painted lifelike depictions of real bodies in real space (especially compared to Rembrandt).
Video Art: Bill Viola
If this style of bringing pictures to life is of particular interest to you, I recommend that you check out the works of Bill Viola, video artist whose medieval art inspired pieces brought slow movement into some recreated paintings – such as “The Greeting” where Mary, pregnant with Christ, greets her cousin Elizabeth, pregnant with John the Baptist.
